Chasing the best golf courses? Head to Yarrawonga

Situated on the banks of the Murray River and a stone’s throw (or strong putt) from Lake Mulwala is one of the best golf courses in New South Wales and Victoria.

Just three hours’ drive from Melbourne and an hour from Albury sits this picturesque golf resort, rated one of ‘Australia’s Top 100 Golf Courses’ by Golf Australia. It’s also Australia’s largest public access golf course.

The Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort is a favourite among locals. And the incredible golf is a common reason people to move to the beautiful Yarrawonga region in the first place! It offers the ultimate tree-change lifestyle and a wonderful way to stay healthy and fit. It’s scenic and relaxing as well as being right near the water where the action often takes place.

The best golf courses

There are three golf courses available at the resort and all are beautifully manicured and maintained. They offer golfers a diverse range of play whether you’re a novice, enthusiast or championship player. Try your hand at the two 18-hole courses, the Murray Course and Lake Course, or the 9-hole Executive Course for a total of 45 holes. You can actually watch a ‘fly-over’ of each course on the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort website, which is super helpful for planning your experience at one of Australia’s best golf courses.

The very popular Murray Course takes you on a journey through towering river gums and sandy river flats, where plenty of lakes and lagoons prop ready to swallow your ball. It’s a course that favours a straight hitter and a strong player.

Not only does the Lake Course offer breathtaking views of the beautiful Lake Mulwala but it also houses several strategically placed lakes along the course (hence the name). They’re stunning but, along with the 54 bunkers, test even the most experienced players and require a keen eye and precision performance.

As a 9-hole course, the Executive Course is obviously a shorter course and an ideal choice for beginners or those a little pressed for time. The much-loved course design ensures it’s still challenging enough to entice more experienced golfers, however, and the beautiful parklands make it an enjoyable course for everyone.

Golf competitions and tournaments

For golf enthusiasts, the resort hosts several competitions and tournaments throughout the year. Men’s competitions run every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and women’s competitions run each Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

To further test yourself over the course of the year, you might like to get involved in some of the fantastic club tournaments, such as the 18th Summer Classic Golf Event to be held on 13 and 14 January 2018. (Entries close as soon as the course capacity is reached, for anyone keen to participate, so best to check it out sooner rather than later.)

What else does the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort offer?

So you’re not a huge golf fan yourself but are accompanying an eager golf enthusiast to Yarrawonga? The resort also offers a range of other entertainment and leisure activities to keep you occupied. And the kids!

If you’re feeling energetic, try out the tennis courts, solar-heated swimming pool, croquet lawns or lawn bowls greens. The two lawn bowls greens are open all day until late and accommodate professional players, social players or those just looking to go barefoot with a beer. The nine croquet lawns also offer games for a range of ages and abilities, with competitions throughout the year and regular social events.

There are other health and fitness options available too, including the gym and personal training and group training sessions. It’s not hard to get fit and healthy around the resort!

When it’s time for some rest and recuperation you might like to check out the luxury movie theatre with its huge range of films. There’s something for everyone, including the kids…if you can drag them away from the kids activity area.

Where can we stay?

There are plenty of great places to retreat to when you’ve exhausted yourselves in the sun. The nine different styles of resort accommodation cater for different budgets and holiday goals, from comfortable suites to luxurious villas and apartments in between. All are self-contained with communal barbeques nearby and private bathroom facilities.

Eager campers, those on a tight budget or people looking for something a little different could also try the Yarrawonga Holiday Park or Yarrawonga Caravan Park, which are great family options and are not far away.

Other great things to do in Yarrawonga

Yarrawonga offers so much more than fantastic golf. Being close to the water means that fishing and watersports such as water skiing are a popular pastime for locals and tourists. There are a range of peaceful walks to do around Lake Mulwala, particularly spectacular at sunset, and it’s hard to go past a meandering river cruise along the Murray. Plus there’s the Massive Murray Paddle, held every year in November, for those wanting a bit of an adventure.

Off the water you’ll find the Yarrawonga Wine District, which includes the towns of Yarrawonga, Tocumwal, Stathmerton, Mulwalla, Numerkah, Cobram and Barooga. Some of these vineyard settings are among the most beautiful in Australia. The wines are pretty special too.

For food lovers (aren’t we all?) the region’s fresh produce and gourmet food options please every palate – whether you’re after cheese, chocolate or a special dining experience. You might like to try out the Farm Gate Trail, a journey of discovery through some of the region’s most renowned farms and wineries. The Rich Glen Olive Estate is also a must – the products are made from ingredients right off the farm and much of the produce is harvested straight from the garden and onto your plate if you order a meal at the cafe.

Follow the Yarrawonga food trail and see where you end up!
